The Airbus A380 is a massive wide-body aircraft designed and manufactured by Airbus. It is the only full-length double-decker jet airliner in the world and the biggest passenger airliner overall.
Airbus began conducting studies in 1988, and the project was unveiled in 1990 with the goal of competing with Boeing’s 747’s dominance in the long-haul market.
The project, formerly known as A3XX, was introduced in 1994. On December 19, 2000, Airbus announced the start of the €9.5 billion ($10.7 billion) A380 program.
On January 18, 2005, the first prototype was unveiled in Toulouse, and on April 27, 2005, it made its first flight.
On December 12, 2006, it was granted its type certificate by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
